Setting Big Goals

What would you set out to accomplish if you were guaranteed not to fail? I’ve been curious as to why people do what they do for a very long time. People trade time for money, money for stuff and complain that they don't have enough of either at the end of the day. I too fall into this trap so please don’t think I am casting judgement, moreso empathy.

Now, back to the question - What would you set out to accomplish if you were guaranteed not to fail. Take a moment to truly ponder this before going on.

Setting Big Goals

Personally, when I reflect on the question above, I find my initial thoughts gravitate toward something like hiking Mt. Everest, starting the next big Real Estate Holdings company, buying a Championship level Golf Course or even running for Office.

After really sitting with this though for some time, I tend to start to talk myself out of my own dream. I start to think smaller and think, well maybe I’ll run a marathon first or start an online store with lower overhead. I then think, well I know I love golf but I have never run a golf course before let alone owned one. And lastly, I give up politics faster than any other one.

Why do I do this?

Did you yourself start to do this too?

The question again was, what would you set out to accomplish if you were guaranteed not to fail? GUARANTEED! This was a “dream big” kind of question and my brain worked so hard to minimize that based on what I’ve been taught and the expectation I have of myself.

No matter in personal life or business, setting big goals is the key to changing the course of our own lives. It may also help if we reframe our definition of failure. Why set big goals? Let's look back at our Intro Blog Post and our initial goal of posting weekly.

“To get to 52 posts in 2025, I would need to write 20 minutes each and every day. I would also need to spend 10-20 minutes each day doing research for current Blog Posts and gathering ideas for future topics to cover.

Why set such a big goal knowing the likelihood of posting 52 times in 2025 and spending 140 minutes a week, every week, for 52 weeks in a row, is NEVER going to happen.

Let's say I post 32 times and only spend 20 minutes writing on average 3 days a week. This may seem like a giant disappointment based on what we've been taught in school.

Posting Grade = 61.5% or "F"

Writing Grade = 42.9% of "F"

For years I saw this as failure but over time have started to reshape my expectations of myself and review my growth over longer time horizons.”

Will I strive to only make 32 Real Estate Blog Post? No, we set big goals and are going to strive for all 52. Reality is I am one post behind over a 11 week period. Years ago, this would have been a failure and likely the end of my writing journey. Today, I am thrilled to say that I have posted 10 unique blog posts in 11 weeks all based on past experiences.

You will need to be kind to yourself as you form big goals and take action. Your body and mind will likely fight against you in subtle ways. Pay attention and you will notice in your own life.

If you’re trying to run 365 days in a row, you can bet you will get sicker than you have gotten in years this year.

If you are trying to save up $25,000, you better believe your car is going to break and your friends will ask you to take a last minute trip with them.

If you want to buy a Golf Course, I guarantee you your smaller investment properties will make you question it at times along the way. Many times likely…

Why not aim big? I cannot guarantee you perfection but that really isn’t the expectation. The expectation looking back after a year, two years or even a decade is that we are far better off because we aimed so damn high in the first place that getting better was our only option.

If you want an accountability partner, email me at TeamGatesRE@gmail.com with the following and maybe you will be the new runner above that hits 300 of 365 days or the saver who went from broke to $21,000 a fixed car and lifetime of memories from their trip.
